THE 3RD GYMNASIUM, HERAKLION, CRETE

The 3rd gymnasium is in Crete a region worth exploring with rich history tradition and landmarks of cultural heritage. We implement cultural and environmental projects and participate in activities which reinforce tolerance to difference and promote cultural diversity. The majority of students is Greek who need to keep up with all rapid changes but there are also immigrants who try to integrate into the mainstream society. We provide personalized teaching for a few deaf pupils. Some pupils come from vulnerable backgrounds and have difficulties in adjustment.

Hence we face issues that need careful elaboration: How do pupils interact and overcome sociocultural differences? What do they bring to school? What does their school offer them? What identity do they develop? How can we help them release tension and resolve conflicts? Our priority is to build bridges of communication with the students encourage them to establish powerful connections with each other and erase social prejudice. Consequently it is essential through innovative methods to approach teenagers especially those who feel less privileged or isolated so as to enhance their self-confidence and autonomy. Thus our ultimate goal is to motivate our students to turn from passive listeners into active participants in crucial developments of our community establish a safe school environment responsive to their aspirations and prepare them to be involved in the decision-making process regarding their future as individuals and European citizens. Indubitably this partnership will contribute to that direction. Early school leaving (ESL) involves factors of prolonged marginalization intense isolation gradual rejection and a sense of inferiority all of which deprive young people of equal chances. Therefore it is of vital importance through transnational cooperation to provide our students with learning to learn skills reinforce the benefits of lifelong learning cultivate mutual respect for cultural variety and encourage social solidarity and community cohesion. Our school after taking part in all activities a thorough survey on ESL and evaluation of the project outcomes will prepare and disseminate abroad a contemplation campaign to highlight that attending and finishing school is a valuable asset. Lastly throughout the implementation of this project our students will become aware that their school has the quality of being a school with European prospects, since it is one of the numerous of the E.U states.
